The Matthews House and Thompson School District are proud to announce the arrival of The Landing, a new regional shelter for youth and young adults ages 15-20. A grand opening celebration will be hosted at the site, located at 814 E. 16th Street in Loveland, on Wednesday, December 18, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The event will feature guest speakers, tours of the building, and refreshments.

The Matthews House will operate the new facility. It will address the immediate needs of unaccompanied youth, including care to support their mental health, assistance to help them stay in school and graduate, and enrichment activities to build a more inclusive community. Thompson School District’s former Monroe Early Childhood building was extensively renovated to provide a home for the shelter, which is a joint partnership of the district, The Matthews House, and Poudre School District.

In addition to accommodating approximately 20 overnight guests, the facility will also offer resource access for youth in need during daytime hours, operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The shelter will officially open its doors to regional youth on January 27, 2025.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the grand opening of The Landing with our community,” said Dr. Marc Schaffer, Thompson School District Superintendent. “Not only will it serve as a safe and nurturing environment for youth in need of shelter, it will also provide tremendous assistance for youth across our region as we work together to support their growth and development.”

“The Landing will be a difference-maker in the lives of Larimer County youth experiencing homelessness. Having a reliable place to sleep every night or a safe place to spend their daytime hours outside of school will have an immense and indelible impact,” said Mr. Brian Kingsley, superintendent of Poudre School District. “The Landing is a perfect example of how community partners can come together and make a difference.”

The Landing will provide more than shelter to the 1,600 unhoused youth in Northern Colorado, 450 of whom are currently traveling without parents or guardians. It offers a robust set of programming to empower youth and help them transition toward independence. Daytime visitors can access educational support, including homework assistance and skill-building workshops. Life skills training in cooking, financial literacy, and job readiness will prepare youth for self-sufficiency, while therapeutic support services address mental health needs. Recreational and creative outlets will also be available, ensuring a well-rounded approach to healing and growth.
