The State of Colorado’s Department of Education has presented five academic achievement awards to Thompson School District schools. The awards were earned as a result of student assessments that were completed this past spring. Administered each school year, the State of Colorado’s assessment program is a standards-based process designed to measure student performance at schools throughout the state.

Awards presented to district schools include:

John Irwin Schools of Excellence Awards

Named after former Colorado State Representative John J. Irwin, these awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time. These schools received an “Exceeds Expectations” rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the state’s School Performance Framework, reflecting exceptional performance in Math, English Language Arts, and Science. District winners of this year’s John Irwin awards are:

Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Awards

The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth. On the School Performance Framework, these schools “exceed” expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth and “meet or exceed” expectations on the indicator related to academic growth gaps. Thompson School District Celebrates Award Wins

“We are immensely proud of the outstanding student achievement and growth at our award-winning schools,” said Dr. Marc Schaffer, Thompson School District Superintendent. “It takes the collective efforts of our staff, our students, and our parent community to support the conditions necessary for excellence within these schools. Thompson School District remains steadfast in its commitment to helping each and every student learn, grow and reach their greatest potential. These awards serve as validation and recognition of the extraordinary efforts and commitment that students carry forward every day to learn, grow and excel. We are very proud of them all!”

“I am thrilled to see our school communities honored in this way,” said Barbara Kruse, Thompson School District Board of Education President. “Each day, staff members throughout our district dedicate their time and talents to educating and supporting each student in TSD. Awards such as these help to reinforce the power of that hard work and dedication. I am so proud of the school and district teams for these accomplishments, and I’m thankful for the generous support that our district has throughout our community.”

Thompson School District’s academic success extended beyond state assessment performance; once again, the district experienced an increase in its high school graduation rate, with a 2022 measurement of 87.6% – an increase of 2.8% from 2021. Thompson’s four-year graduation rate has increased each of the past five years.
